YEAR OF THE SNAKE CONTEST

High School Dances

Published by LANNING | Thursday, October 10, 2013 7:10 PM

Year of the Snake entry for October. 100 words. For RY.

Growing up, we had dances that were spectacular live-music rock concerts. It could be four bands a night. These were events, not simple school dances. People came from all over. Guys from other schools were always looking for trouble. They came drunk, stoned. Of course they were turned away. So they'd go around back, wait for someone to exit, sneak in. Then they'd find someone they were looking for. Punches got thrown. Someone maybe went through a glass window. The cops would descend. There were arrests. Pretty typical. But the dances were bigger than this. The music just played on.

Had some great groups. Glass Candle, The Calientes. Hour Gang. Pinky's Rose Garden. I remember one group doing "In A Gadda Da Vida," the long version, including the drum solo. The groups did all of the popular songs of the late 60s and early 70s.
