YEAR OF THE RAM CONTEST

The Secret Keeper

Published by LANNING | Tuesday, September 01, 2015 6:34 AM

Year of the Ram September entry. 100 words.

The words you speak
spout an armed force of meaning
deployed to overwhelm me
beating my brain
with your Scrabble victory vocabulary
triumphing over me
while you further drop fancy phrases
to boggle my mind
always in a specially covert way
that makes me think we are not ever
having an actual conversation
but some one-sided declamation
where I am trying to enter into
an obscure society
a convocation of abstruse knowledge keepers
where I stand outside the select circle
the sphinx’s riddle unsolvable
as you keep secrets from me
forever in the sealed vault
that is your word hoard.

As the narrator's sense of anger and exclusion gets stronger, the more multi-syllable words show up on the page. Kind of a slow-starting avalanche of "scrabble victory vocabulary" (a really nice term). It gives the poem a cool sense of movement.
