Such a Haole

Here's to natto, wherever you're from!

I walk in the store thinking
Notahaolenotahaolenotahaole
Singing to the Jpop on the store sound system
Customers stare when I buy natto.
Then I pick up nori flavored potato chips
Notahaolenotahaolenotahaole
I put the natto, daikon, anpan, nori potato chips, and a box of miso on the counter
“That all sir?”
I answer my phone then hang up
“You speak Japanese?”
“Um, yeah.”
“Pretty good. Both my parents are Japanese but I cannot speak.”
Notahaolenotahaolenotahaole
When I see fish tanks I think, “yum.” Then
see me watching myself with fish swimming through
my shark belly white face
Such a haole

This is heartbreaking. A tragic self-realization in a Nijiya or a Marukai. I felt the reverse in college when my English was praised by some Upper East Side dowager in an Asia Society screening of a Kurosawa film. Both and neither. Advantage and disadvantage. So vivid!
