Mother Knows Best

100 words for December.

Mom kept many gallons of water under the staircase. I watched her eyedropper eight careful drops of bleach into each bottle, wondering how the water would taste. She said if I had time, I should go across campus to Bilger Hall. There was a fallout shelter in the basement. If there was no time, she advised me to Duck and Cover under my classroom desk, making sure to shield my eyes from flying glass.

Kim Jong-un casually launches missles over South Korea, over Japan, over lunch, over cocktails, over his shoulder like a continental soldier.

I feverishly collect gallon bottles.
