Sundays, Elani and I go swap meet, garage sale side. Both us stray, look tchrough da rubble of people we nevah know. One lady tells us bout her treasures, some spillen out of trash bags, Elani picks up one coconut leaf hat and asks how much.
“Fifty cents.”
He runs a thumb ovah da leaf, hands her one dollah, “Keep da change.”
Latah, we talk story. He show me how fo rib da leaf, fo weave um like he used to wen he was young. Wen hats sold fo mo den two quartahs, before could buy um down Waikiki.
