Deployed

This piece is about my cousin, who is almost 2 years old, and his dad, who was just deployed with the Coast Guard to help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf.

You’re just a tiny child. Your hands no bigger than a plumeria flower. Yet you hold on. You don’t understand it fully, only that someone you love is leaving. And you will cry. He’ll come back after what seems like eternity. He will come back, unscathed, unscarred, unlike others. Yes, he is blessed, the place he is sent to safe. It could have been different. He could have been sent to danger, where one incident could mean he’s not returning. Ever. But you were lucky, and he will return. And you will smile and laugh with joy.
