Triggers for October:

1. I felt a hand on my shoulder
From “The Wake,” Brenda Kwon

2. I not finished but
From “Peanut Butta Jelly,” K.L. Quilantang

3. it actually took a full year
From excerpt from HAWAIIANS TODAY, J Freen

4. yes, I lived in sin
From “The Phone,” Ghislaine D. Chock

5. as we sat through moments of silence
From “Negotiating Loss,” Milton Kimura

6. I looked up my name once on the Internet
From “Pickles and Shawnilynn and Me at the Mall," by Michael Little

7. one century bleeding into the next
From “Basic Vocabulary,” Amy Uyematsu

8. this isn’t where I grew up
From “Sand Island,” Jill Widner

“Shoulder Moon”

What makes sense to me,
Too goddamned tired
Too goddamned tired
Too goddamned tired.
But I used to try and make sense of it all.
As if other people’s tiny ways of understanding
Deserved to be as bright
As the half moon in this twilight sky above me.
But I’m too goddamned tired
For anything other than what makes sense to me.
And right now I’m hungry
On my bicycle headed home. Shoulder moon,
Balancing on wheels is a miracle.
