September is the month to 'GIVE ALOHA'. Anytime you visit Foodland or Sack N' Save this month, give the cashier our number (#77156) and Bamboo Ridge Press will receive a donation from Foodland and the Western Union Foundation!

So here's an incentive to go to the store... a recipe from author and poet Jean Y. Toyama! Mahalo, Jean, for sharing with us.

Bruce’s Tart via Jean

For 9-inch tart shell
2/3 stick butter
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 egg
½ teaspoon baking powder
Pinch salt
Filling
3-4 tart apples
almond slices
sugar

Grease and lightly flour tart pan. Melt butter, take off heat and add flour. Mix well. Add sugar and mix until smooth. Add salt and baking powder. Be sure mixture is at mild temperature at this point. Add egg. (I let it rest in the refrigerator until ready to put in pan, easier to handle.)

Crust should be able to hold its shape. Press into floured tart pan. You can add flour or butter to adjust. Don’t over handle. Return to refrigerator, if you want crust to be flakey.

Peel and quarter the apples then slice into ¼-inch slices. Arrange in shell. (Your artist sense can shine here.) Sprinkle sugar and arrange almond slices (optional).

Bake in preheated oven 35-40 minutes, until apples brown and center is done. May be done with pears or strawberries. Tart apples are best.

---Don't forget to send us an email (brinfo@bambooridge.com) with your receipt total and date so that we can thank you properly.---
