reading from her novel ANSHU
ANSHU follows the central character, Himiko Aoki, a pregnant and unmarried Hilo teenager, as she is sent to live with Tokyo relatives shortly before the outbreak of war. Aoki must navigate the clash of her Japanese American identity with Japan’s cultural norms.

Out Loud in the Library! is a literary and music event celebrating the rich intersection of words and music by local artists, and is meant to inspire and encourage students to find their own creative voice through writing, reading, poetry, music, and spoken word.

Juliet S. Kono is the author of several books. She has appeared in many anthologies and collections and is the recipient of several awards. She is retired and lives with her husband in Honolulu.
Ryan Jonathan Koo was born and raised on the island of Oahu and received his MA in History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2007. The focus of his studies is in Asian History, particularly of premodern Southeast Asia with a concentration on the colonial history of Indochina. He has travelled extensively throughout the East and Southeast Asia. His research and writing continues to be focused on the Khmer Rouge genocide and 20th century conflicts in Vietnam and Laos.
